Hiring a Contractor

Surely you’ve heard your share of horror stories; renovations gone bad, unreliable contractors or people paying down payments and getting nothing in return. The question is: what can you do to make sure you don’t live a similar experience?

You can’t rely only on gut feelings to choose your contractor but it is important that you feel comfortable interacting with whoever you’ll be hiring. Chances are that if you don’t trust them before the project is started, the experience won’t be as pleasant as it could be.

A good way to know that you are getting a good contractor is referrals. You can start your verifications before even contacting the contractors for a quote; ask people in your social surrounding if they know good contractors for the work you are intending to get done, or perform a search for roofing contractor reviews online. Once you’ve found a couple that you’d like to obtain a quote from, ask them for references at the time of the estimate.

While it is important to look for value in any purchase, it is important to keep the saying “you get what you pay for” in mind. Generally speaking a company that promises to offer the most and best of everything, from products to services, should not be the lowest quote you receive. True value is in getting everything you need at a price that you are able to afford and benefit from a pleasant experience while obtaining the results you were looking for. You may request several quotes and get a bit of the taste of the customer service offered by different companies and then establish which ones can meet your needs and expectations.

And once you have chosen a contractor, confirm with them your choice of material, colors, and the timeframe in which you would like to work to be done. This will make it clear for both parties and you will be sure to avoid any misunderstanding.
